A state lawmaker from LaPlace said Tuesday he intends to enter the race for Louisiana Democratic Party chairman. He seeks to replace current leader Katie Bernhardt, who members have heavily criticized for the party’s poor showing in this year’s statewide and legislative elections.
Rep. Randall Gaines was elected to represent House District 57 in 2011 and reached his term limit this year.
“The writing is on the wall, was at the ballot box on October 14th and November 18th, and now in our hands,” Gaines said in a statement. “This is our opportunity to take immediate and decisive action to restore public confidence in the effectiveness and strength of our state Democratic Party by voting for a new day.”
Gaines, an attorney, most notably succeeded in updating Louisiana’s habitual offender law in 2019. His change created a clean slate of sorts if an offender’s previous offense occurred a prescribed period of time earlier.
