The Alabama Republican Party (ALGOP) has called for an official apology from State Rep. Juandalynn Givan (D-Birmingham) after her Tuesday tirade in which she referred to a GOP lawmaker as an “N-word.”
On Thursday, 1819 News reported on Givan’s comments from the floor of the Alabama House of Representatives, where she used a 2017 song by hip-hop artist Jay-Z to refer to State Rep. Kenneth Paschal (R-Pelham) as an N-word.
“The Alabama Republican Party strongly condemn Representative Juandalynn Givan of District 60 for her premeditated and inappropriate statements toward a fellow member of the Alabama House of Representatives,” said ALGOP Chairman John Wahl. “I call on her to apologize to Representative Kenneth Paschal immediately.”
The 2017 song referenced by Givan is titled “The Story of O.J.,” which makes frequent use of the racial epithet.
The song’s hook reads as follows:
“Light ni**a, dark ni**a, faux ni**a, real ni**a
Rich ni**a, poor ni**a, house ni**a, field ni**a
Still ni**a, still ni**a”
Givan directed the song’s lyrics toward Paschal by repeatedly saying, “You still one.”
“The people of Alabama expect their elected officials to behave in a manner becoming of that high privilege,” Wahl continued. “Rep. Paschal was vulgarly referred to as a term that is beneath the dignity and respect of any human being. We cannot stand by and allow this honorable gentleman who served in uniform and continue to serve as a public servant with duty and commitment to be treated and referenced so vilely in violation of House Chamber decorum.”
